MAKING OF AMERICA:
TIME’s Annual American
Leaders Special Report
Using History’s Greats to Explain the Opportunities
of our Time
Each July, TIME editors take an in-depth look at how the influence
of America’s original leaders, innovators and influentials
continue to shape our nation. This year, TIME editors
explore the life, inventive genius and legacy of Thomas Alva
Edison.
2010 Making of America Subject: Thomas Edison
American Inventor, Scientist and Businessman
When we think about the making of America – how America became
great – we think about our country’s scientific influence
and eventual dominance mainly due to the achievements and acumen of
Edison. He was almost entirely self-taught and eager to turn his inventions
into profitable businesses.
From his impact as inventor of the light
bulb, phonograph, motion picture camera and 1,090 other creations
he patented, Edison presents a critical business figure in the intersection
between invention and capitalism, among many other themes that still
resonate today.
